Our family just returned from a vacation/mission trip to the Navajo Reservation in Arizona. It was our privilege to spend time with pioneer Baptist missionary, Mark Haynes, and his son, Joel. Mark Haynes has been serving the Lord on “the Rez” for 17 years and is currently the missionary pastor of Ganado Baptist Church in Ganado, AZ. He and Mrs. Haynes have seven children; all are serving the Lord, and several are on the mission field. His son, Joel, returned to the Rez with his new wife and is now pastoring Solid Rock Baptist Church in the Navajo town of Nazlini. He started this church from scratch just one year ago. Though the entire town only has 400 people, God has blessed their work, provided a building and the ability to renovate it, and fifty people gather every Sunday to hear the Word of God preached. Almost all were saved through the ministry of this new work.
I had the privilege of teaching a two-hour class on practical ministry in the new Ganado Baptist Bible College, on the subject of church planting. It is exciting to see these two missionaries and their converts, as well as some other local preachers, focused and working to carry out the Great Commission in their area. I also had the privilege of preaching to the dear people at Solid Rock Baptist Church. It was a blessing to meet our Navajo brothers and sisters in Christ. They made us feel at home.
While in Arizona, we also visited the Grand Canyon, as well as local sites such as de Chelly (pronounced de-shay) canyon and Monument Valley. We tried to go to Carlsbad Caverns as well, but our vacation was the victim of the government shut down. The Caverns, a National Park, were closed. We did enjoy beautiful weather and several long backwoods hikes.
Below are some pictures from the trip for family and friends.
