Paul had a secret grief – a thorn in his flesh that seemed to be a terrible hindrance in his life. He called it “the messenger of Satan to buffet me.” As a messenger, this thorn brought him messages from hell – messages designed to discourage, dishearten, and frustrate the man of God in his purpose. The pain and hindrance was so great that even the iron-willed apostle was driven three times to his knees in earnest prayer that God would remove the thorn from his life. Then, on the third occasion, he learned that though the thorn brought a message from the devil, it was really the secret source of God’s power in his life.
